More About Me
My name is Robbie, thank you for taking the time to visit my website. Here is a I little more about me in case you are interested…
I was born and raised in Johannesburg where I attended public school. I am proud of my city and country. I consider myself very fortunate to have been brought up by loving parents who worked hard for decades to raise my two brothers and I. Home was always a safe and supportive environment I am happy to say.
What was less straight forward was my journey into the profession of Psychology and Psychotherapy. Like a lot of young teens I was very unsure of what career to pursue as I left high school. This was made more complicated (more so for my parents) by the fact that I was for most of my school career, more interested in playing soccer and cricket and any other sport than focusing on my school work.
Following University I spent a few years working and travelling overseas. I returned home and pursued a career in corporate recruitment before the idea to study further and embark on a new career journey began to call me.
Fast forward the story, my search for a more meaningful calling eventually led me to a worthy path to pursue, in the field of Psychology, and it has been incredibly rewarding. This has been reinforced in recent years when I learnt about an approach called Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) that just seemed to make sense and speak to me as a person and clinician. Its sense of optimism and attitude of belief in people’s innate abilities really drew me in. I found SFBT to be an incredibly powerful and evocative way of working with people and have set about trying to master it over the last few years. The more I have learnt, practiced and applied SFBT the more confident I have become in its effectiveness to positively and rapidly impact people’s lives. It is an approach I endeavor to improve in daily and continue to practice in to this day.
From a training perspective, I completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Johannesburg. I then completed an honours degree through UNISA whilst maintaining a corporate career in executive recruitment for a number of years. More recently I completed a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology at Midrand Graduate Institute (now the Pearson Institute), followed by an internship at The Centre for Psychological Services and Career Development (PsyCaD) at the University of Johannesburg.
I have also completed a Master of Science degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Bangor University in the United Kingdom, the first programme of its kind to be accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). This has fostered special interests in the areas of performance psychology and working with high achievers in sport and other high performance areas and professions.
In addition to private practice, I also in work in the Employee Wellness space (EAP/EWP), supporting employees from a number of South Africa’s top companies and organisations.
I am registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), and my practice is registered with the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF)
HPCSA registration number: PS 013 0753
